Description

Since I was only going to be wearing this costume to the midnight premier I wanted to make it very cheap.

For the gloves I bought really cheap metallic lace fabric in gold and black. I glued the fabrics together and sewn them together as normal.

For the dress I went with a body con dress I already had in my closet. Since I already have large hips I skipped the flared hip part of her dress. To alter the dress I removed the sleeves and hemmed the bottom to be shorter. I also made a faux collar out of craft foam and fabric glued it to the dress to keep the butterflies around the neck in place.

All the butterflies are made of craft foam. I cut out about 400 individual wings and spray painted then orange. I then hand painted the details. While looking at a reference photo of her dress I hot glued the wings in the same pattern. Once I had the majority of the pattern complete I put on the dress and fabric glued the foam onto my dress. For the butterflies that have spread wings I switched to hot glue. I would take 2 wings and glue them like a normal butterfly and then glue that to the dress.

For the wig I bought a very cheap Effie wig from amazon (I believe it was only 8 dollars). The wig had a flower on it so I removed it. I then sprayed the wig with dry shampoo to get rid of the shine of the crappy wig fibers and to give it a paler color. I then had to tease the curls and add a few extra wefts of hair around the ears and the bang area just to make the style a little closer. I then set it with tons of hairspray.

For the headdress I cut out a circle of black craft foam and covered it with 2 layers of the black fabric I used for the gloves and hot glued it to the wig. I then took pieces of floral wire and coiled the bottom and glued it to the black circle. I made them varies heights and for each butterfly I have 2 pieces of wire placed for support. I made each butterfly out of craft foam and the antenna are floral wire. I glued each butterfly on top of the wire and then painted all the wire black.

And thats about it! Everything was very time consuming but also very cheap. Probably spent 20-25 dollars total.

also did you have any trouble with wings coming off when you put the dress on, because i was considering sewing some of the wings and butterflies on for extra stability.
